12th Annual Technology Policy Exhibition Demonstrators

Overview | Demonstrators | Conference

Accenture
The demonstration will show how patient data is made available to clinicians at the point of care through the seamless exchange of health records between multiple locations and disparate systems using an electronic health record (EHR) system. The demonstration will also show how a personal health record (PHR) can help patients take an active part in the management of their care. This patient centric focus enables patients to control who can access their health data and what type of data can be viewed by individuals or groups. Using a PHR, the patients can electronically transfer registration and medication data to the providers of care. Accenture's demo will show that the health data exchanged is syntactically and semantically normalized to produce a true longitudinal health record.

Avaya
Hurricane Katrina left more than 30 communities along the gulf coast unable to process 911 calls for help from their citizens because the Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) were rendered inoperable. Avaya in partnership with several industry leading companies has created a mobile portable Public Safety Answering Point that allows 911 call takers to relocate away from threatened geographies yet maintain the ability to receive and react to emergency calls. This capability was put successfully to the test recently in Houston as Hurricane Ike devastated parts of that community. Please come visit our booth for an explanation and demo of how next generation 911 capabilities can be used to avoid repeat of past tragedies.

ClearPlay, Inc.
ClearPlay has developed the next generation of parental controls to open a new world of choice to parents and children. ClearPlay's advance parental filtering technology is the first to utilize the new attributes of digital media and the power of the Internet to enable families to customize their viewing of regular movies or TV shows watched via DVD, VOD or any other digital medium. Independent of any participation from either content producers or government, ClearPlay's parental controls can actually provide hundreds of viewing options for a single movie - rather than simply blocking movies or shows based on vague rating systems. This new filtering technology automatically skips or mutes specific content during the playback of regular movies or TV shows according to individual viewing preferences. Consumers can now customize their playback settings, choosing personal filtering levels within various content categories according to their own comfort levels. ClearPlay's new technology fits very well with the objectives of the recently passed Child Safe Viewing Act (S. 602).

Comcast
Ultra-high speed broadband is becoming a reality at Comcast. The Comcast DOCSIS 3.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) demonstrates high data service speeds in excess of 100 Mbps. These speeds will be compared to the conventional 1.5 Mbps seen on DSL service and the 6 Mbps offered by many cable companies. The mechanics of this demo involves several PC's connected to cable modems. One cable modem will be capped to run at 1.5Mbps, the other, over 100Mbps. In the demo, a user will request a file download from each computer, and the DSL-speed modem will show substantial wait time, while the DOCSIS 3.0 modem will download the file in seconds and start playing. For example, this will show that an HD movie can be downloaded in under 3 minutes with DOCSIS, whereas with 6mbps, it would take approximately 67 minutes and with 1.5mbps, it would take over 4 hours.

Commonwealth of Virginia
Now more than ever before, broadband telecommunications services are essential to fostering economic growth, civic participation, health care access, education, public safety and other services.

There are a variety of factors including challenging topography, low population densities, and restrictive laws, ordinances and regulations that can combine to create an unfavorable deployment environment for traditionally modeled private investment. To address the issue of broadband coverage gaps, Governor Kaine challenged the Commonwealth of Virginia's Broadband Roundtable to:

In answer to this challenge, roundtable members analyzed and documented "key success factors" of existing community led broadband deployments, and unveiled an online community "toolkit"designed to help local and regional leaders plan and launch a community led broadband initiative.

IiStrategyLabs
On September 11th, 2008 Vivek Kundra, asked iStrategyLabs how we could make their revolutionary Data Catalog useful for the citizens, visitors, businesses and government agencies of DC. The Data Catalog contains all manner of open public data featuring real-time crime feeds, school test scores, poverty indicators and more.

We knew that the old way of spending millions of taxpayer dollars with big, slow contractors was a broken model in need of fixing. Our answer was to hold an innovation contest where we put the data in the hands of the people, and give them cash prizes and recognition for their efforts. We therefore created Apps for Democracy - a contest that cost Washington DC $50,000 and returned 47 iPhone, Facebook and web applications with an estimated value in excess of $2,000,000.

Salesforce
Cloud computing allows Congressional offices to run their constituent operations on the Web. They can manage constituent relationships, handle correspondence, track contacts and issues, and monitor media. And they can do it using the same user-friendly interface that has made the consumer Web so popular. Because cloud computing applications run in an off-site Internet data center and are accessed via a web-browser, they can be implemented in a matter of weeks without having to purchase any software or hardware. Instead, offices simply pay a monthly fee according to the number of users. Given these advantages, it is no wonder that cloud computing is projected to account for 25% of all software sales in three years. Unfortunately, Congressional rules have been interpreted to prevent Members from taking advantage of cloud computing to manage their constituent relationships. This policy interpretation should be reconsidered so that Congress, like consumers and businesses, can take advantage of the benefits of cloud computing.

With DigaSign's support utility, we will demonstrate the complete control and audit over a user's access to the system that makes DigaSign perfect for licensure governing bodies to grant or limit access to commissioned users (notaries, engineers etc.). DigaSign can expedite document processing services needed by federal, state and local governments, military, and a multitude of various industries.

Xerox
The demonstration will feature a wireless multifunction imaging device that prints with solid ink, an alternative to the traditional laser ink or ink jet technology. Unlike other technologies that rely on the manufacture, transport, filling and disposal / reuse of large plastic containers, solid ink allows users to replace their ink using a small block of solidified ink that becomes liquefied as it is used. As lifecycle energy efficient as competing products, solid ink products create far less waste than traditional imaging equipment. Solid Ink Technology is an alternative printing technology that has some compelling environmental attributes. The US Government's current energy programs, however, suffer design flaws that actually work contrary to its stated goals of promoting sustainable products in the marketplace, and solid ink is one example of how the Government's policies need to be adopted to new technologies with great environmental promise.
